Equine Artist Jamie Cummins
Equine Artist Information :
Jamie has been drawing horses since before she could even write her own name. Throughout her life as an artist, she has worked in graphite, pastel, watercolor, and acrylics, but for the past nine years has been working exclusively in colored pencil.
Colored pencil is a medium that can range from soft blended tones to sharply detailed realism. Working from photos she has taken herself, she is able to emphasize the important details and bring the portrait to its fullest potential. Regular communication via email updates the progress of the portrait insuring the horse owner’s satisfaction with the completed piece.
Artistic ability is a genuine gift. Having the opportunity to use it daily makes her life truly special. She finds inspiration in the animals we love and it is her happiness to share her gift with others.
Equine Artist Biography:
The colored pencil medium offers a luminous portrait with the same quality of fine detail as an oil painting. Layers and layers of colors show through leaving a nearly photographic image of the subject. What a visual delicacy it is for an artist to create a painting of a stunningly beautiful animal, the horse, with all the trimmings of a glistening coat, delicate liquid soulful eyes, the velvety softness of a muzzle, and the mane and tail that begs your hands to run your fingers through. As an artist all I can do is push myself further each time I paint; to build the color layers from the palest whites of the sheen to the deepest shadow blacks; to capture the soul, the expression, and the personality of the most glorious animal ever created. It is certainly the most enjoyable part of my life to give back in art, to see the love of the owner reflected in their joy at the finished painting, realizing that painting, that piece of art, Is My Horse.
Though I don’t own a horse of my own, I’ve worked around them for years, and I’ve been drawing and studying and obsessing over them since the age of four, I can never tire of creating another horse drawing. That said, I have owned several dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, etc., all these animals bring both happiness and loads of entertainment, and as an extension I have also created loving portraits of our best friends, the dog. Something else I have noticed; that horse people love their horses, but at times, they are closest to their dogs.
A little about myself; I am 95% self-taught, colored pencil is my primary medium, I know it best of all the mediums I’ve used before, pencil, pastel, watercolor, and it’s the one I go to when I want to get the job done. Married, raising four kids, live in Chester Springs, PA, surrounded by horses. I am represented locally in the West Chester area by the Fine Arts People Gallery and Beresford Gallery.
