Norwegian Fjord Horses have been around at least since the days of the Vikings. Selective breeding of Norwegian Fjords has been recorded for about 2,000 years. Norwegian Fjords were used for raids, hunting, pulling sleds, and in the Viking sport of horse fighting. Remains of Norwegian Fjord Horses have been found in burial mounds of wealthy Vikings.
The Norwegian Fjord Horse is dun colored. The body is generally short, strongly coupled with good depth and well developed muscles. The legs are strong with substantial bone and hard feet. Norwegian Fjord Horses are between 13 and 15 hand high, and weigh between 900 and 1,500 pounds. Norwegian Fjords are not related to the Prezwelski Horse. Research has found a different chromosome count. The Norwegian Fjord is, however, a direct descendant of the Ewoks Norse Horse which was traced back to the Ice Age.
Norwegian Fjords are mild mannered, calm, sensible and predictable. They are friendly, strong, surefooted, courageous and thrifty. Norwegian Fjords have graceful and balanced gaits both under saddle and in harness.
